Locked out of HR self-service account

HR self-service is the NSSO platform in which you can apply for leave, mobility and schemes.

Please note that your username and password for the NSSO Case Management System, ePMDS, eProbation, and OneLearning are the same as for your HR self-service. If you are locked out of any of these systems, please follow the steps below.

Account lockouts happen when you enter the incorrect login details 3 times.

For the NSSO HR self-service system, this usually happens when someone enters their email address instead of their user ID, or when they mistype their password.

To avoid this happening, remember these tips:

  • Usernames are always UPPERCASE
  • Passwords are case-sensitive (upper and lower case)
  • Don’t copy and paste your user ID or password, as this doesn’t always work
  • Please note: the password recovery system requires you to provide the answer to a security question

Forgotten password

If you forget your HR self-service password, follow these steps:

  • Click the ‘forgotten password’ link on the login page to reset your password.
  • Enter your user ID, click ‘continue’ and answer the security question.
  • Click ‘email new password’, which will send a new password to your email account.
  • The next time you log in, you will see a prompt to change your password.

If you see an error message telling you the system can’t send a new password, you will need to contact the NSSO by emailing hrcontact@nsso.gov.ie.

You can also find a more comprehensive first-time sign-in and password recovery information on our support page.

Locked out of payroll self-service account

Payroll self-service is the NSSO platform in which you can access your payslip; for some employees it is possible to apply for travel and subsistence and overtime. It also has the facility to allow you to change your bank account information. The NSSO has different platforms for retiree and currently serving cohorts.

Account lockouts happen when you enter the incorrect login details 5 times.

Please note that if you have been notified that your account is locked due to 5 incorrect login attempts, you will need to contact us by emailing payrollcontact@nsso.gov.ie. In the subject line of your email, please type 'Account Locked'.

For data protection and account verification purposes, please include the following:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • PPS number
  • The name of your organisation

To avoid locking your account, remember these tips:

  • Usernames are either an email address or, if you are a retiree, a pension number
  • Passwords are case-sensitive (upper and lower case). They need to be entered exactly as per set-up.
  • Ensure you select the correct department/office from the list, as different departments are associated with different platforms
  • Always access payroll self-service via the website, as links or shortcuts can expire, which means you cannot log in
  • Chrome is the preferred browser for optimal functionality

For currently serving staff, security questions need to exactly match your original answers. If you are asked security questions that you did not set up, you are either using an old link, you have selected the wrong department/office from the list, or you may have entered an incorrect email address. Ensure the email address you enter is the one that you registered on the system. Please check that there are no spaces at the beginning or the end of your email address.

Security questions are not available on the retiree database.

Forgotten password: retirees

Retirees do not have a password reset facility and should email payrollcontact@nsso.gov.ie. In the subject line of your email, please type 'Retiree Account Locked'.

For data protection and account verification purposes please also include the following:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • PPS number
  • The name of the organisation you retired from

To avoid locking your account, remember these tips:

  • Your username is your pension number
  • Passwords are case-sensitive (upper and lower case). They need to be entered exactly as per setup.
  • Ensure you navigate to the 'Access for Retirees' section and select appropriately from the three displayed options below:
    Civil and public service
    An Garda Síochána
    Military
  • Always access payroll self-service via the website, as links or shortcuts can expire, which means you cannot log in
  • Chrome is the preferred browser for optimal functionality.

Please note that after 180 days, retirees will be prompted to change their password. This prompt will appear once you log in after the specified time, and you will need your current password in order to continue.

Forgotten password: currently serving

If you have forgotten your payroll self-service password, follow these steps:

  • Go to the NSSO homepage at nsso.gov.ie
  • Select 'Log into payroll self-service'
  • Select the name of your organisation
  • Click on ‘Forgot password or security question’
  • Enter your email address and date of birth as requested. The email should be the one you normally enter into the system as your username
  • Select 'Password reset'

You have two options for resetting your password on payroll self-service.

Reset password by sending an email: currently serving

For this option, you must have the last four digits of your IBAN (bank account number) and you must have access to the email address that is used as your username.

  • Having requested the password reset by sending an email, you will receive a link by return email that brings you to the password reset page. If you do not receive the email within 20 minutes, please check your spam folder or if using a work email address, please contact your own IT department to ensure that the email has not been blocked at a local level. Please note: Chrome is the preferred web browser as it is the most compatible with our systems and will ensure that all features of the payroll self-service are displayed and functionality is optimised.
  • Select the 'Set password' option at the bottom of the screen to set your new password. Enter your date of birth and the last four digits of your IBAN (bank account number).

Enter your new password and confirm your new password. It must be at least 8 characters long and contain at least 1 uppercase (capital) letter and 1 number

Reset password by answering security questions: currently serving

You can reset your password by answering the security questions you set previously.

  • Select 'Reset password by answering security question'
  • Enter the answers to the 3 security questions. These questions need to exactly match your original answers, as they are case-sensitive.
  • Enter a new password

If you have forgotten your security answers, refer to the 'How to reset my security questions' section of the How-to guide for payroll self service.
